Getting around Florence: airport transfers, tickets and tips

Florence is small and mostly pedestrian, so you will walk to nearly everything. Buses and the tram help with the outskirts and the airport.

From the airport

From Florence's Peretola airport, take the T2 tram to the city centre, or a taxi, which is quick. Many visitors fly into Pisa and take the train to Florence in about an hour.

Tickets and passes

A single bus or tram ticket is valid for a set time and must be bought before boarding. Trains to Pisa, Siena and Lucca leave from Santa Maria Novella station.

Practical tips

  • Driving in the centre is restricted by ZTL zones, and cameras fine unauthorised cars. Park outside and walk.
  • Validate bus tickets on board.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: the pavements are cobbled and uneven.
  • Taxis are metered and available at ranks, not generally hailed in the street.

What to avoid

Hiring a car for the city: parking is difficult and restricted-traffic fines are heavy.

Seeing Florence on foot

Walk. The historic centre is largely traffic-restricted. Trains to Pisa and Siena are straightforward, but a tour is the easy way to reach wineries.

Prices, ticket rules and safety conditions change. Treat this as a starting point and check official sources and your government's travel advice before you go.
