About Rome

Two thousand years in a single walk

Rome stacks the ancient world, Renaissance art and a very good lunch into a few square kilometres. The ancient centre – the Colosseum, the Forum and Palatine Hill – works best with a guide, because the ruins are just stones without the story. The Vatican is a separate trip altogether and deserves half a day.

Queues are the main thing to plan around. The Colosseum and the Vatican Museums both sell timed entry, and the shortest waits are the first slot of the morning and the last hours of the afternoon.

Best time
April to early June and September to October. Summer is very hot and crowded; January and February are quiet and cheap.
How long
Three days for the highlights, four if you want a day trip to Pompeii or Tuscany.
Getting around
The historic centre is compact and best on foot. The Metro is useful for the Vatican and the Colosseum; buses are slower. Taxis are cheap in the centre but traffic is heavy.

Rome travel questions

Do I need to book the Colosseum in advance?

Yes, particularly between April and October. Official tickets sell out and resale prices are inflated. Book a time slot when you know your dates.

How long does the Vatican take?

Allow three to four hours for the museums and the Sistine Chapel, and an extra hour for St Peter's Basilica.

Is Rome safe for tourists?

Generally yes. Pickpocketing around the major sights and on the Metro is the main risk – keep your phone and wallet out of back pockets.
