The Taj Mahal, a great Mughal fort and a ruined imperial city

Agra was the Mughal capital for much of the 16th and 17th centuries, and it is the home of the Taj Mahal. The white marble mausoleum is worth the trip on its own, and the red sandstone Agra Fort and the abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri add a full second day.

Many travellers see Agra as a day trip from Delhi, but staying a night lets you see the Taj at sunrise before the crowds and gives the other monuments the time they deserve.
