About Tokyo

Neon, temples and the best food in the world

Tokyo is enormous and extremely easy to navigate. Trains run on time, signs are in English and the city is safe at all hours. The hard part is choosing: Shibuya's crossing, Asakusa's Senso-ji temple, the Meiji Shrine, Akihabara's arcades and the fish markets all deserve time.

Food is the main attraction. A guided tour through izakayas, ramen alleys and department-store food halls is an easy way to learn what to order for the rest of the trip, and day trips to Nikko, Kamakura and Mount Fuji add a very different side of Japan.

Best time
March to May (cherry blossoms in late March and early April) and October to November. Summers are hot and humid, and winter is dry and clear, which is good for seeing Mount Fuji.
How long
Five days minimum; a week gives you time for day trips.
Getting around
Use a Suica or Pasmo card on trains and metros, or add one to your phone. Google Maps works well for navigation.
