About Madrid

Great art, late nights and the best tapas crawl in Spain

Madrid is a city that rewards staying up late. The Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen-Bornemisza form the 'Golden Triangle of Art', and between them they hold Velázquez, Goya, Picasso's Guernica and a good part of European painting. The Royal Palace and the Retiro Park fill out a first day easily.

The city feels best after dark, when the bars of La Latina and the Malasaña district fill up and dinner starts at 9:30pm. A tapas tour on your first evening is the quickest way to learn how to order, and Toledo or Segovia make a good day trip.

Best time
April to June and September to October. July and August are very hot and many locals leave the city; winter is cold but dry and sunny.
How long
Three days for the city, plus one for Toledo.
Getting around
The metro is fast, clean and cheap, and covers every sight. The centre is walkable, and the high-speed trains to Toledo, Segovia and Córdoba leave from Atocha and Chamartín stations.
