About Luxor

The Valley of the Kings, Karnak and the temples of ancient Thebes

Luxor is often called the world's greatest open-air museum. On the east bank of the Nile stand Karnak and Luxor Temple; on the west bank are the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon.

Most visitors spend two or three days here, starting early to beat the heat. A dawn balloon flight over the west bank is a highlight, and a felucca sail on the Nile suits the evening.

How long

Luxor travel questions

How many days do I need in Luxor?

Two days cover Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple. A third adds Dendera or Medinet Habu.

Are hot-air balloons worth it?

Yes, a dawn flight over the Nile and the west bank is one of Egypt's best experiences. Flights depend on the wind.

Is Luxor safe for visitors?

Yes, with sensible precautions. Check your government's travel advice before you go.
