About Paris

Museums, river light and long lunches

Paris rewards both planning and wandering. The big sights – the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Versailles – run on timed tickets that sell out days ahead in high season, so those are the things to book before you travel. The rest of the city is better left loose: a morning in Montmartre, a long lunch in the Marais, an evening walk along the Seine.

Most visitors underestimate how much ground the Louvre alone takes up. A good guided visit is the difference between queueing for the Mona Lisa and understanding why the museum matters. The same goes for Versailles, where a tour that starts before the crowds arrive is worth the extra money.

Best time
April to June and September to October for mild weather and long daylight. July and August are hot and busy; December is cold but the lights make up for it.
How long
Three full days covers the headline sights; five lets you add Versailles and a slower neighbourhood or two.
Getting around
The Métro and RER are fast and cover everything you will want to see. Buy a carnet of tickets or use a contactless bank card. Central Paris is also very walkable, and the river is a useful reference point.

Paris travel questions

How far ahead should I book the Eiffel Tower?

For summer weekends and sunset slots, book several weeks ahead. Off-season weekdays are often available closer to the date, but you gain nothing by waiting.

Is the Paris Museum Pass worth it?

It pays off if you plan on three or more major museums in two or three days. If you visit only the Louvre and the Orsay, individual timed tickets are usually cheaper.

Can I visit Versailles in half a day?

Yes, but a full morning at minimum. The palace takes about two hours; the gardens, the Trianon estate and the Queen's Hamlet add several more.
