About Kyoto

Temples, tea houses and the old capital of Japan

Kyoto was Japan's capital for over a thousand years and still holds some 1,600 temples and 400 shrines. The Fushimi Inari gates, the golden Kinkaku-ji, the bamboo grove at Arashiyama and the wooden lanes of Gion are all easy to reach by bus, train or bicycle.

The key to Kyoto is timing: go early to the famous sites before the crowds, and leave afternoons for a tea ceremony, a garden or a quiet side street. Nara and Osaka are both about 45 minutes away.

Best time
Late March to early April for cherry blossom and November for autumn leaves, though both are very crowded. Summer is hot and humid; winter is quiet and cold.
How long
Three to four days.
Getting around
Buses, the two subway lines and the JR and Hankyu trains cover the main sights. A bicycle is a good option in the flat centre. Taxis are useful for temples on the hills.
