#1 · 3 hAnne Frank HouseThe canal house where Anne Frank and seven others hid from the Nazis for over two years, and where she wrote her diary. The building, a neo-Gothic palace with gardens and a cycling tunnel beneath it, is a destination itself.#3 · 3 hVan Gogh MuseumThe world's largest collection of Van Gogh's work, about 200 paintings, hundreds of drawings and his letters, arranged in chronological order so you can follow his development from dark early work to the bright colours of Arles.#4 · 1 h 30 minAmsterdam Canal CruiseA one-hour cruise on the 17th-century canal ring passes gabled houses, hump-backed bridges and houseboats. It is the best way to understand how the city was built and to see the architecture without crowds.#5 · Full dayKeukenhof Tulip GardensThe world's largest flower garden, with more than seven million bulbs planted each year, including tulips, daffodils and hyacinths, set in a park near Lisse, about 40 minutes from Amsterdam.#6 · Full dayZaanse Schans & VolendamWorking windmills, traditional wooden houses, a cheese farm and a clog workshop, 20 minutes north of the city, often combined with the fishing village of Volendam on the former Zuiderzee.#7 · 2 hHeineken ExperienceA self-guided museum in the old brewery, with tastings and interactive exhibits.#8 · 4 hVolendam & Marken Day TripA half-day trip to traditional fishing villages with wooden houses, a cheese farm and a clog workshop.

About Amsterdam

Canals, cycling and world-class art

Amsterdam is small, flat and beautiful, and its 17th-century canal belt is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The headline sights are museums with timed entry: the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House, the last of which is the hardest ticket in the city. Book those first, then fit everything else around them.

The city is best on foot, by bike and from the water. A canal cruise is the standard introduction, and the neighbourhoods of the Jordaan and De Pijp reward a slow afternoon of cafés, markets and small shops. Spend a morning in the museum quarter and another in the canal houses, and you will have seen the best of it.

Beyond the city centre, the tulip fields and Keukenhof Gardens (open for about eight weeks in spring), the windmills of Zaanse Schans and the fishing village of Volendam all make easy half-day trips.

Best time
April and May for tulips and mild weather; June to September for the longest days and terrace life. Winters are cold, damp and quiet, with a light festival in December and January.
How long
Two to three days; add one for the tulip fields or Zaanse Schans.
Getting around
Walk or cycle: the centre is compact and flat. Trams, buses and the metro fill the gaps; use a contactless card or the OV-chipkaart. Cycling is how locals get around, but bike lanes are fast and busy, so stay out of them when on foot.

Amsterdam travel questions

Is Amsterdam worth visiting in winter?

Yes. There are fewer crowds, museums are quieter, and the Light Festival in December and January is a highlight. Dress warmly and expect rain.

How far ahead do I book the Anne Frank House?

Tickets are released in batches well in advance and sell out quickly, so check as soon as you have dates and set a reminder for the release.

Do I need cash in Amsterdam?

Almost nowhere. Cards and contactless payments are accepted nearly everywhere, and some places don't take cash at all.

Is it easy to cycle in Amsterdam?

The city is flat and has cycle lanes everywhere, but traffic is fast and busy. Take care at junctions and trams, and ride in the same direction as the locals.
