About Athens

Where the classical world began

Athens is dense with antiquity and easy to underrate. The Acropolis is the obvious anchor, and the Acropolis Museum at its foot is excellent. The Plaka neighbourhood, the Ancient Agora and the National Archaeological Museum fill out the rest, and the city's food and rooftop bars are better than its reputation suggests.

Athens is also a good base for Delphi, Cape Sounion and island day trips, so a couple of extra days gives you far more than the city alone.

Best time
April to early June and late September to October. July and August can exceed 38°C, and sightseeing in the afternoon sun is hard going.
How long
Two to three days, plus one or two for day trips.
Getting around
The metro is quick and connects the airport. Most ancient sites are within walking distance of each other.
