Things to do in Barcelona

#1 · 2 hSagrada FamíliaGaudí's unfinished basilica has been under construction since 1882 and is still being built; completion of the main tower is targeted around 2026, the centenary of his death. Inside, the columns branch like trees and the stained glass throws colour across the stone. It is the most visited monument in Spain and one of the most distinctive churches in the world.#2 · 3 hPark GüellA hillside garden city planned by Gaudí for a wealthy patron, with a mosaic-covered terrace, a long serpentine bench, a hall of Doric columns and views over the whole city to the sea. It was never finished as housing and became a public park in 1926.#3 · 3 hCasa BatllóA townhouse on Passeig de Gràcia that Gaudí remodelled in 1904–06, with a skeleton-like façade, an undulating tiled roof said to represent a dragon's back, and interiors where almost nothing is a straight line.#4 · 2 h 30 minGothic Quarter & El BornThe oldest part of Barcelona is a tangle of medieval lanes around the cathedral, with Roman wall remains, hidden squares and the Picasso Museum nearby. The adjoining Born district is full of wine bars, small shops and the Santa Maria del Mar basilica.#5 · Full dayMontserrat Day TripA serrated mountain about an hour from Barcelona, with a Benedictine monastery that houses the Black Madonna, La Moreneta. The boys' choir sings most days, and a rack railway and funicular climb to trails with sweeping views.#6 · 3 hTapas & Wine TourBarcelona's best bars are in El Born, Gràcia and Sant Antoni. A guided evening links several of them, tasting jamón ibérico, patatas bravas, croquetas and local wines, and explains how tapas culture works.#7 · 2 hCamp Nou Stadium TourA visit to FC Barcelona's stadium and museum, including the pitch side and the dressing rooms.#8 · 1 h 30 minFlamenco ShowAn evening of guitar, singing and dance in an intimate Barcelona tablao.

About Barcelona

Gaudí, beaches and late dinners

Barcelona is built around Gaudí. The Sagrada Família, Park Güell and Casa Batlló are the three experiences that sell out first, and all of them use timed tickets, so they are the bookings to make before you fly. Add the Gothic Quarter's medieval lanes, the Picasso Museum and a beach that is a metro ride from the cathedral, and you have a city that works for a long weekend or a full week.

The rhythm is different from northern Europe. Lunch is around 2pm, dinner rarely starts before 9pm, and the city is busiest well after dark. Plan the big sights for the morning, rest in the afternoon, and leave the evening for tapas. A guided tapas crawl on your first night is the easiest way to learn what to order and which bars are worth the wait.

Beyond the city, Montserrat's jagged mountain and its monastery are 60 km away and make a good day trip, as do the beaches and fishing villages of the Costa Brava and the cava cellars of Penedès.

Best time
May to June and September to October give warm sea, long days and manageable crowds. July and August are hot, humid and the busiest; winters are mild and quiet, though too cool for the beach.
How long
Three days covers the headline sights; five lets you add Montserrat and slow down.
Getting around
The metro is fast, cheap and covers every major sight, and a multi-trip transport card saves money over single tickets. The Gothic Quarter, El Born and the waterfront are all walkable. The Aerobús and trains link the airport to the centre in about 30–40 minutes.

Barcelona travel questions

Is Barcelona expensive?

Moderate by Western European standards. Meals, wine and the metro are good value; hotels and Gaudí tickets are the main costs, and prices rise in summer.

How do I avoid pickpockets in Barcelona?

Keep bags zipped and in front of you on La Rambla, the metro and the beach, never leave a phone on a café table, and be wary of anyone who creates a distraction.

Can I see the Sagrada Família without a ticket?

You can see the outside for free, and it is impressive. The interior, the best part, needs a timed ticket.

Is Barcelona good for a day at the beach?

Yes, in summer. Barceloneta is the busiest; Bogatell and Mar Bella are quieter. Watch your belongings.
