A serrated mountain about an hour from Barcelona, with a Benedictine monastery that houses the Black Madonna, La Moreneta. The boys' choir sings most days, and a rack railway and funicular climb to trails with sweeping views.

Know before you go

Weekdays are quieter. The choir typically sings around 1pm, so time your visit. Bring layers: it is cooler on the mountain than in the city.

What to book

A tour that includes a winery or cava tasting is a popular combination. If you go independently, take the train from Plaça d'Espanya to Monistrol and then the rack railway.

What to check before you pay

  • Confirm total time on the coach versus time at each stop.
  • Check whether entrance fees and lunch are included.
  • Look for a pick-up point close to your hotel, not just a central meeting spot.
