3 days in Cusco & Machu Picchu

A realistic day-by-day plan with start times, how long to allow, and travel estimates between stops.

This 3-day plan covers Sacred Valley, Inca Trail, San Pedro Market Food Tour, Rainbow Mountain Hike and more. It starts around 9am, keeps two main things per day with a proper lunch, and leaves the evening for food or a show. Travel times are estimates from the distance between stops.

1

Day 1

Sacred Valley, Inca Trail & more

  1. 09:00

    Sacred Valley

    Full day

The altitude is lower than Cusco, so it is a good place to acclimatise before the high sites.

  2. 12:30

    Lunch

Walk a couple of streets away from the main sight – prices drop and quality rises.

  3. 14:00

↓ About 65 min by metro or taxi

    Inca Trail

    3 h

Permits sell out months in advance and the trail is limited each day. Fitness and acclimatisation matter.

  4. 19:00

    San Pedro Market Food Tour

    2 h 30 min

Eat at busy stalls. Bring small bills.

2

Day 2

Rainbow Mountain Hike & Cusco City Tour

  1. 09:00

    Rainbow Mountain Hike

    3 h

Altitude sickness is a real risk, so acclimatise first. The trail is steep and cold, and it can be crowded.

  2. 12:30

    Lunch

Walk a couple of streets away from the main sight – prices drop and quality rises.

  3. 14:00

    Cusco City Tour

    2 h 30 min

Take it slowly, because the altitude makes walking tiring. Sacsayhuamán is on a hill above the city.

  4. 19:30

    Dinner

Book ahead if you want a specific restaurant, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings.

3

Day 3

Day trip: Machu Picchu

  1. 08:30

    Machu Picchu

    Full day

Entry tickets are timed and limited, and circuits are one-way. Allow around three hours at the site.

  2. 19:00

Evening back in Cusco & Machu Picchu

Dinner near your hotel. After a full day out, keep the evening easy.

3-day Cusco & Machu Picchu questions

Is 3 days enough for Cusco & Machu Picchu?

Five days. This plan fits the main sights into 3 days at a comfortable pace, with a lunch break each day.

Can I change the order of the days?

Yes. Group days by neighbourhood if your hotel is far from a sight, and swap any day if opening hours (many museums close one day a week) or the weather requires it.

What should I book before I go?

Book Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu first – they use timed entry or sell out.
