3 days in Athens

A realistic day-by-day plan with start times, how long to allow, and travel estimates between stops.

This 3-day plan covers Acropolis, Acropolis Museum, Athens Food Tour, Ancient Agora of Athens and more. It starts around 9am, keeps two main things per day with a proper lunch, and leaves the evening for food or a show. Travel times are estimates from the distance between stops.

1

Day 1

Acropolis, Acropolis Museum & more

  1. 09:00

    Acropolis & Parthenon

    2 h

Timed entry slots are now used to manage numbers. Wear shoes with grip: the marble is slippery and uneven, and parts of the site are being restored.

  2. 12:30

    Lunch

Walk a couple of streets away from the main sight – prices drop and quality rises.

  3. 14:00

↓ About 4 min on foot

    Acropolis Museum

    3 h

It is air-conditioned, so it makes a good midday escape from the heat. The top-floor café has an Acropolis view.

  4. 19:00

↓ About 10 min on foot

    Athens Food Tour

    3 h

Lunch is the main meal, and dinner starts late. Greek coffee is strong and served with the grounds.

2

Day 2

Ancient Agora of Athens & Plaka

  1. 09:00

    Ancient Agora of Athens

    1 h 30 min

Visit in the early morning or late afternoon, as there is little shade.

  2. 12:30

    Lunch

Walk a couple of streets away from the main sight – prices drop and quality rises.

  3. 14:00

↓ About 10 min on foot

    Plaka & Anafiotika Walk

    2 h

Evenings are lively; late mornings are quieter.

  4. 19:30

    Dinner

Book ahead if you want a specific restaurant, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings.

3

Day 3

Day trip: Cape Sounion

  1. 08:30

Cape Sounion & Temple of Poseidon

    Full day

Bring a jacket; it is windy even in summer. The sunset crowd is large, so arrive early to find a spot.

  2. 19:00

    Evening back in Athens

Dinner near your hotel. After a full day out, keep the evening easy.

3-day Athens questions

Is 3 days enough for Athens?

Two to three days, plus one or two for day trips. This plan fits the main sights into 3 days at a comfortable pace, with a lunch break each day.

Can I change the order of the days?

Yes. Group days by neighbourhood if your hotel is far from a sight, and swap any day if opening hours (many museums close one day a week) or the weather requires it.

What should I book before I go?

Book Acropolis, Acropolis Museum, Ancient Agora of Athens first – they use timed entry or sell out.
