Visiting Pearl Harbor: tickets, the USS Arizona Memorial and how to plan the day

22 October 20263 min readHonolulu & Oahu, United States

Pearl Harbor is one of the most significant historical sites in the United States, and a visit is a quiet, moving morning. The trick is to understand how the ticket system works, because entry to the Arizona Memorial is timed and free tickets go fast.

What there is to see

The visitor centre has museums and exhibitions, and the USS Arizona Memorial, built over the sunken battleship, is reached by a short boat ride after a film. Other sites in the complex include the USS Bowfin submarine, the Battleship Missouri, where the Second World War ended, and the Pacific Aviation Museum. Many people need a full day for several.

Getting tickets

Tickets for the Arizona Memorial program are free but must be reserved ahead, and a small booking fee applies online, while some are held back for same-day release. Other attractions have separate paid tickets. Check the official site for the latest rules, as procedures have changed over time.

Watch out: Large bags, backpacks and purses are not allowed. Bag storage is available, but check the current rules before you arrive.

Guided tours from Waikiki

Many tours combine Pearl Harbor with a Honolulu city tour, and handle transport and tickets. This is a good option if you do not have a car and want a guide for the history.

What to wear and bring

  • Respectful clothing, since it is a memorial.
  • Sunscreen and a hat, as there is little shade.
  • A small bag only, or none.
  • Photo ID for the security check.

What each site shows

The USS Arizona Memorial is a white structure that straddles the sunken ship, where more than 1,100 crew members remain entombed. The visit includes a short film and a boat ride. You can still see oil rising from the wreck, known as the 'tears of the Arizona'. The Battleship Missouri, a floating museum, is where Japan's surrender was signed in 1945.

The USS Bowfin, a submarine from the war, lets you walk through narrow quarters and understand life underwater. The Pacific Aviation Museum, in historic hangars, displays restored aircraft. Because each site has its own ticket, decide your priorities, and plan at least half a day for two sites.

Practical timing and logistics

Parking is available at the visitor centre for a fee, and ride-hailing also works. Public buses run from Waikiki, though they take about an hour. If you rent a car, combine the visit with a drive along the North Shore.

  • Arrive early: the first hours of the day have the smallest crowds.
  • Allow for security: bag rules are strict, and lines can be long.
  • Eat before or after: food options on site are limited and pricey.
  • Check ferry schedules to the Missouri and Ford Island attractions.
  • Wear sun protection, since many areas are exposed.

Making it a meaningful visit

Pearl Harbor is a memorial, and visitors are expected to be respectful: dress modestly, speak quietly and avoid inappropriate behaviour. For many visitors, it is a quiet, emotional experience, and talking to the park rangers or veterans, when they are present, adds depth.

To lighten the day afterwards, spend an afternoon at the beach, enjoy a shave ice or watch the sunset in Waikiki. Read our Alcatraz guide, the Honolulu guide and the Cancún guide for more bucket-list sites.

Fit it into your Oahu trip

Go to Pearl Harbor in the morning, and spend the afternoon at Diamond Head or snorkelling at Hanauma Bay. See the Honolulu guide, and compare it with San Francisco's Alcatraz.
